NA VC Update 04/23/07

WanderBoyTitle.gif

Good morning everyone. It was a stellar weekend here in Canada the sun was shining, the birds were singing it was beautiful outside. So of course you couldn’t ask for a better weekend to stay in and play video games. Much playing was done by me and Jen. I finished the Godfather: Blackhand edition (Review coming soon) Jen got the first good chunk of Super Mario done as well. So far I’m digging the new platform heavy baddy stomping gameplay but the story seems really long winded and nonsensical at times. Still there are a few good quips like the villainous Count Bleck’s maniacal laugh “Bleh he he he he he BLECK!”

Anyway enough friendly banter I almost forgot that it’s Virtual Console Monday.

The old standard of 3 new releases should be available by noon today (9am pacific). Nothing particularly exciting but with the release of Gradius III that means that there is now over 5 different side scrolling space based shooters on the virtual console for you to enjoy. Oh Goody, let me get my credit card.

Battle Lode Runner® (TG16, 600 Wii Points)
Wonder Boy in Monster World (Genesis, 800 Wii Points)
Gradius III (SNES, 800 Wii Points)

Video Thursday: Zombie Edition

Thursday, April 19th, 2007

Earlier this week I talked a bit about “Wii-Makes” well today on Video Thursday I give you some video from what seems to be the finest “Wii-Make” to date.

This is the New trailer for Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition which I thought was sub-titled “Biohazard Edition” But that could just be the Japanese title cause this trailer doesn’t make any mention of such a “Biohazard”. Nevertheless it’s an awesome trailer that made me jump up from my seat in triumph.

The trailer also contains some gameplay as Ada Wong which allows me to draw the conclusion that the Wii edition will contain “Separate Ways” originally only available on the PS2 version of the game. Ha! Take that Sony.

Today’s second video is 3 minutes of Umbrella Chronicles gameplay footy from Capcom’s Gamers Day earlier this month. We know that it’s kind of a retelling of the first RE story but some interesting things I noticed were that Chris and Jill may not split up this time and almost everything seems destructible. Reminds me of Area 51 which was and still very common at arcade here in Canada.

That’s it for this weeks Video Thursday see you all tomorrow.

EA Canada Births New Wii/DS Studio……Sort of

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

JetBlackWiiNinja.jpg
A couple of former EA Canada employees have started up their own development firm called Jet Black Games to focus on Nintendo Wii and DS development. EA Canada which is known for their stellar work on the popular EA sports titles except Madden of course. Is where these developers got their stripes before heading out on their own.

But why focus on Nintendo Wii and DS game development? Roger Freddi Co-Founder and CEO of Jet Black Games explains.

“Both the Nintendo DS and Wiis WiFi capabilities provide an advanced medium for Jet Black to bring already popular franchises to an even broader worldwide audience.”

Jet Black is going to have their work cut out for them seeing as how Nintendo isn’t really ready to share Wii Online game secrets with 3rd party developers yet. Now lets just hope they come up with something a little better than Need for Speed Carbon.

In Life and Games There Are No Guarantees

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

Up until November 2006 I never really saw any advantages to pre-ordering anything consoles, games , handhelds what have you. Living in Canada and close to major city (Canada’s Largest) stock never appeared to be in short supply. I only found myself going into “Hunting” mode in order to find games that were particularly rare. Last November that all changed when the Wii was released. Weeks and months passed, Christmas came and went and I still found myself Wiiless with a budding Wii-dependent job on the horizon. I won’t go into to details how I ended getting my hands on a console but I will say that it was through some unorthodox although legal means.

All the hunting and disappointments aside the lesson was learned “Next time I pre-order” This week marks the release of the highly anticipated GameCube Wii game Super Paper Mario. Seeing as how many Mario fans will not hesitate to pick this one up it may or may not be difficult to find copies. One US electronics retailer is trying to put those fears to rest by guaranteeing that they will have copies of Super Paper Mario for sale or they will pay you.

You Call This Closure?

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

107.9TheEndLogo.jpgA while back my journalistic nose and I were following a story about a radio station in California that held the “Hold Your Wee for a Wii” contest. Which resulted in the death of one Jennifer Strange due to “Water Intoxication”. Following the contest the radio station promptly fired 10 employees who were involved with the promotion. At the time criminal charges were pending, now according to recent reports no criminal charges will be filed against the DJs who administered the contest despite warnings from listeners and a overall lack of common sense.

According to the California District Attorney’s office

“There were no observable indications or symptoms that Jennifer Strange was experiencing a serious medical emergency which would have required station employees to seek or administer medical aid to her,”

In Canadian law this seems to be a text book case of what we call “Criminal Negligence Causing Death” Not quite murder but a charge used when someones stupidity or lack of judgement results in the death or harm of another. Most often used in impaired driving cases but I think it fits nicely here. The DJs knew the risks and went ahead with the contest despite warnings from one listener who identified herself as a medical professional and others who didn’t think it was a very good idea.

I am certain that this will not bring any resolution to the Strange family but their wrongful death suit against the station might.

SSX Blur Control Walkthrough

Friday, January 19th, 2007

Nicolas Guerin from EA Montreal takes you on a ride with SSX Blur. He explains how you will control you character with the WiiMote and nunchuck as you trick down the mountain slope. It’s defiantly interesting use of the WiiMote and nunchuck. You will be using the WiiMote to draw shapes n the screen to execute special moves. Get “Amped”(pun intended) for this one.

Video after the jump. (more…)
