In Life and Games There Are No Guarantees
Up until November 2006 I never really saw any advantages to pre-ordering anything consoles, games , handhelds what have you. Living in Canada and close to major city (Canada’s Largest) stock never appeared to be in short supply. I only found myself going into “Hunting” mode in order to find games that were particularly rare. Last November that all changed when the Wii was released. Weeks and months passed, Christmas came and went and I still found myself Wiiless with a budding Wii-dependent job on the horizon. I won’t go into to details how I ended getting my hands on a console but I will say that it was through some unorthodox although legal means.
All the hunting and disappointments aside the lesson was learned “Next time I pre-order” This week marks the release of the highly anticipated GameCube Wii game Super Paper Mario. Seeing as how many Mario fans will not hesitate to pick this one up it may or may not be difficult to find copies. One US electronics retailer is trying to put those fears to rest by guaranteeing that they will have copies of Super Paper Mario for sale or they will pay you.
According to Opposable Thumbs if you walk into a Circuit City to purchase a copy of Super Paper Mario after 2:00 pm and they don’t have any available you will given you a 20$ CC gift card. I phoned The Source by Circuit City parent company InterTAN Canada Ltd. to see if this promotion was available in Canada as well. My question was answered with a polite “No it does not” too bad for us hockey hosiers. Still if you live in the US you might want to try and either nab a copy of the game or luck out and get a cool 20 bucks.
This is a welcome change from the normal “getting screwed” vibe I get from game retailers and is definitely a step in the right direction. Nice job Circuit City!

pssst… it’s “hoser”…
I think this is a good idea that they should be doing with all large releases (the Marios, the Final Fantasies, the God of Wars, etc). Sure it may hurt them if they order far fewer than what the demand is, but there’s no such thing as having too many AAA games in stock. Sucks that canucks can’t get the deal, but there’s a far fewer chance of complete sellout here (consoles exempt).
Good luck getting a copy of Super Paper Mario. It looks like a wiinner.
(Sorry about the bad pun… it’s an off day).
