The Cost of Classics
Welcome back to Virtual Console week here on Wii Rally. Today I will be talking about the dollars and cents of the Wii’s Virtual console.
Let’s begin by looking at the preliminary costs of setting up your Wii to download virtual console games.
First you will need a Wii console, available at any common games retailer for 279.99$ CAD or 249.99$ USD. Once you have your console you will need to put it online. The Wii only allows you to connect to the internet via WiFi, so you’ll need a wireless router. The cheapest router available on Best Buy’s website is a D-Link Wireless G Router for 44.99 CAD$. Now you will need a broadband connection which is available from Rogers Communications for 24.95$ CAD a month. You’ll also need a Wii Classic Controller to play most games, you can find them at Best Buy for 24.99$ CAD. Now that that’s all said and done you’re ready to get that Wii online, total cost so far? 374.92$ CAD
Now on to the games, Wii Virtual Console games vary in price by system of original release. NES games will set you back 500 Wii points per game, TG-16 games go for 600 Wii points, SNES and Sega Genesis games both cost 800 Wii points and finally N64 games will set you back a hefty 1000 Wii points.
According to the Virtual Console calculator the total point cost for every VC game is 66500 points. Now buying cards at retail will cost you 24.99$ CAD for 2000 points. You can buy points directly from the Wii Shop Channel with a credit card but for the sake of clarity we will use the retail price point for our calculations.
So 66500 points divided by 2000 is about 33 Wii points cards rounded down. At 24.99$ each, 33 Wii points cards will cost 824.67$ CAD (Ouch!) but that’s for all 100 Virtual Console games available.
The total cost of going from nothing to classic gaming euphoria is 1199.59$ CAD
Again remember that the total cost includes a Wii console, wireless router, 1 month’s internet service and enough Wii points to get all 100 Virtual Console titles available at press time. Seems like an awful lot of cash just to relive those gaming days of yore doesn’t it?
*Note* All the prices listed are in Canadian dollars and do not include applicable taxes.
