Top Five Most Wanted Virtual Console Games

by Tim

Here it is as promised inspired by the Top 5 Most Wanted Wii Games of 2007 here is the Top 5 Most Wanted Virtual Console games. Originally Super Mario World was on this list but Nintendo went and ruined that by releasing the game today. Enjoy!

NUMBER 5
Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask
The classic Zelda that everyone wants to get their hands on seems to be Ocarina of Time, didn’t you just play that on the GameCube? I’ve noticed that Majora’s Mask is most often ignored. One of the titles that required the N64 Expansion Pack, Majora’s Mask is one of Link’s more unique adventures. The debut of Tingle, a challenging 3 day time span mechanic and the ability to change in to a Zora, a Goron and even a Deku Shrub are just some of the trails of Link while adventuring through the land of Termainia. We all know that Ocarina of Time looks beautiful but let’s not forget that Majora’s Mask looked even better before Nintendo went with the cell shaded look for Wind Waker.

NUMBER 4
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
A joint venture between Nintendo and SquareSoft (Now Square Enix) this was a very different undertaking for any Mario fan. Suddenly you had to worry about Hit-points and Magic spells. This was also the first game in which Mario and Bowser formed albeit temporary alliance. With several new characters and some amazing sprite work, this is a must have for any fan of the Mario series.

NUMBER 3
Super Metroid
Billed as the definitive Metroid game in the series, it’s pretty hard to top Super Metroid. This is the game where Metroid’s distinct gameplay and level design were executed with brilliance. Again some amazing sprite animation is show in this title. If it wasn’t for Super Metroid’s success you wouldn’t have seen any of the quality GBA (GameBoy Advanced) Titles that we have gotten in recent years. Although after Super Metroid Nintendo didn’t release another console based Metroid till Metroid Prime on the GameCube which was worth the wait because the N64 just couldn’t have done Samus Aran justice.

NUMBER 2
Punch Out
One of the best games to play on a rainy Sunday afternoon and one of the best single player games to play with a friend. This game was an incredible challenge I’ve only ever seen one person finish the game by beating Mike Tyson. For a game that barely ever let you win Punch-Out always had you coming back for more, sometimes laughing at you even mocking you as you struggled to defeat resident fat-ass King Hippo. Also the soundtrack can be beat, take that Rocky.

NUMBER 1
StarTropics
I must say that this is the game that sold me on the Wii, when I first heard of the Virtual Console I said “You mean I’ll be able to play StarTropics again?” than everything got dark and I came to some hours later. Given to me by my Mom for my 8th birthday it took me a year almost to the day to complete this epic quest with aliens, robots and talking dolphins; Despite my little cousin erasing my game save on at least 3 separate occasions. StarTropics was the first game I ever noticed to break the 4th wall and have gamers complete a task out side the game’s virtual world. There was a letter from your uncle glued to the instruction booklet, at a critical moment in the game you are instructed to dip this letter in water to reveal a secret code allowing you to proceed with your adventure. For this and many reasons too personal to list StarTropics is Wii Rally’s Most Wanted Virtual Console game.

While this is my obvious choice (anyone who knows me will agree), my most wanted VC game has to be EarthBound. Even though I have a working cartridge of it, I don’t have a working SNES to go with it, and a keyboard just doesn’t feel right playing any console game. I have fond memories playing EB, fighting crazy enemies like the Shroom!!! (actual name) and moving records (of the musical kind). While the gameplay was very simple and the graphics were rather crude, the craziness just kept drawing me in.

  2. J.W. Says:

You know, the one game I want on the VC, and/or XBLA for that matter, is a little-appreciated side-scrolling shooter called “Dinosaurs for Hire.” When I was growing up, that game got me through SO many boring summer nights.

I wholeheartedly agree with Metroid and Star Tropics (and its sequel). I will cry if they don’t bring Star Tropics out.

  14. David Says:

I want Super Mario RPG, but if Shining Force 2 was released for VC, that would be the most amazing thing Nintendo has ever done, well except for releasing the Wii.

  18. Ryan Says:

You gotta be joking. No Earthbound? FF3? Goldeneye? Mario 2,3 or Lost Levels? Yoshi’s Island? Bionic Commando? Mario Paint? Chrono Trigger?

I can agree with Mario RPG and maybe Metroid.. But really. You smoking crack here? The rest of the list belongs in the top 50, not top 5.

  19. Jacob Says:

    GoldenEye!

  24. Phronk Says:

I gotta agree with Startropics being in the top 5. I friggin loved that game. And I haven’t seen a game since where a yo-yo is one of the main weapons.

I’m also with you on putting Majora’s Mask before Ocarina. Everyone’s played Ocarina to death, but MM was also an amazing game. The Groundhog Day idea really made it stand out from other Zelda games (and every other game, for that matter).

  25. Jon Says:

    Three words, Konami, Metal Warriors.

    Nuff’ said.

  26. MikeTheEBGuru Says:

The code is 747. I think the 4th wall illusion is runied some 17 years later.

  42. Matty Says:

I guess ill jump on the goldeneye bandwagon, while in comparison to todays FPSs, goldeneye is a bit outdated, but it was still fun has hell, the only FPS that ive played where you wanted to play though a level multiple times.

i do own the game, plus a working N64, but my cartrige is currently being borrowed and i cant seem to get it back

some other ones i would like to see would be the Star fox games (SNES/N64)
and of course the other 2D Mario games, they’re classics

  43. Milkman Says:

    You forgot Earthbound.

  44. Eric Says:

There really are a few glaring omissions in this list. First and foremost of course are Earthbound and ChronoTrigger. Goldeneye should probably be on there as well.
