Virtual Console Mini-reviews
Still going strong with Virtual Console Week here on the Rally today I’m doing some mini-reviews of the classic and not-so classic.
Donky Kong
NES, 1 Player, Wii Remote, 500 points
Nintendo’s Donkey Kong was originally released as a coin-op arcade game and as such it makes sense to have only 3 stages where the overall goal is to beat the high score. However shelling out 500 points for a game with only 3 stages doesn’t really seem right in today’s day and age. Bottom Line: Skip this one, trust me you’ve played it at some point in your life.
Punch Out!!
NES, 1 Player, Wii Remote, 500 points
A great classic with tones of replay value. I was once asked why I never wrote down any of the passwords for this game. My answer, “I find it more fun to try and finish all the bouts in one shot. I wouldn’t want to fight the thoughest guy over and over that’s just boring”
Bottom Line: Grab this one for endless hours of fun.
Mario Kart 64
N64, 1-4 players, Classic Controller, 1000 points
Mario Kart is super fun to play with your friends and a nice challange when by yourself. Yes it is true that some functionality from the N64 version has been lost during the porting process but did anyone really like racing their ghosts anyway. Whether you’re really into racing or just love to battle your friends with koopa shells, you shouldn’t be dissapointed with MK64.
Bottom Line: Try not to smile while racing along Rainbow Road, I dare ya.
Super Ghouls and Ghosts
SNES, 1 player, Classic Controller, 800 points
Sick of all those kiddy games because they’re too easy? SG&G will change that thinking right quick. Even with the difficulty on easy and your lives starting at 9 this game willk offer a challenge no matter how good you think you are.
Bottom Line: I don’t know what I like more the gay deamons or Arthur runing around in his underwear.
Ecco the Dolphin
Genesis, 1 player, Classic Controller, 800 points
Unique gameplay is what gets me with this one. Swimming through the ocean trying to save your friends from evil crabs and the deadliest villain of them all, the evil tuna net. Sure that may not being an entirely acurate discription of Ecco but any game that teaches kids not to pollute and that they must repect the ocean is fantasic in my book.
Bottom Line: Maybe it’s time to switch to chunk light HAM!
Splatterhouse
TG-16, 1 player, Wii Remote, 600 points
Chainsaws for arms, nuff said!
I hope you enjoyed my mini-reviews of some of the finer games on the VC. Tune in tomorrow for a retrotastic version of Video Thursday. Long live the classics.
